Did you see them last night–the crescent Moon’s knowing smile next to Venus’ radiant eye? The Venus/Moon conjunction is a high holy moment of the Divine Feminine, arriving each month (but not always visible). Last night’s pairing was one of the most seductive I’ve seen, and it brought special gifts! My mother (MOON) surprised me with several treasures from her jewelry box (VENUS): two necklaces, one amber, the other an antique chinese gambling chip with diamonds, gold elephants with blue sapphires and amber moon earrings. I love how many ways the sky writes itself into our lives. Yet it’s all too easy to overlook the signs. To become a deep sky reader, we must be willing to see its resonance everywhere, in big gestures and small corners. How did Venus/Moon visit you?

I’m not an early riser, but one morning years ago, I awoke at 5:00 am. Something urged me out of bed and toward the front door, where through a window, I saw Venus glittering beside the Crescent Moon. Transfixed, I watched for several minutes–as something happened that I couldn’t quite name. Even now I can’t tell you what it was, except that I was deeply touched and changed. “Darsan” is a Sanskrit word for seeing and being seen by the gods. Seeing Venus and the Moon–the sky’s two holders of the Divine Feminine–was just that holy. I received a transmission; information was exchanged. Another opportunity for this sacred seeing comes tomorrow night at twilight (Friday February 27) when their conjunction will be particuarly inspiring as Venus is at her brightest magnitude. Who knows what messages we’ll receive!

…the fairies,
the world’s kindness, flit through landscapes,
trying to make things right.
–Denise Duhamel
The Pisces New Moon is a good time to look for grace. I recall a friend telling me about driving with her daughter down a mountain road–when the car strikes a patch of black ice and spins out of control. Time slows as she surveys her options. If she steers left, they’ll hit an oncoming vehicle. If she steers right, they’ll plunge down the mountain. She becomes aware of a tree which seems to have suddenly lit up. Feeling powerless to head towards it, she asks the tree to pull them to itself instead. In an instant the car is smashed against the tree, totalled. My friend and her daughter walk away without a scratch, the tree loses a small patch of bark. I wonder if that was a special tree, or if the trees around my house can do things too. Do I have to wait for an emergency? Or can miracles happen anytime? Like today when I’m skidding with insecurities, will the dogwood across the road pull me to safety? Its branches nod: “The day is good. Free yourself!” Oh yes.

I’m endlessly fascinated by the many expressions of Pluto’s move into Capricorn, the latest being an over-the-hill dog winning “Best in Show” at Westminster. Capricorn is the sign of the elder. Clearly among Pluto’s many Capricorn agendas is a stunning new empowerment of elders. (See also Suzanne Somers on Oprah declaring that at 62 she’s living her best life yet!) As for the dog, “Stump” retired in 2004 after a serious illness, yet last week his owners decided to enter the ten-year-old (that’s 70 in human years) into the prestigious competition. Pluto said “Yes!” and the crowd whooped with joy as Stump ran his victory lap around the ring. Who says old dogs can’t perform new tricks? That means for you and me now: No excuses.

When the moon is in the seventh house
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars
This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius
I like magic. But I usually delete any emails that announce a monumental shift in consciousness will occur next Tuesday at 10:00 am when ancient Light Beings or a world-wide group meditation will suddenly open portals to other dimensions–if we rub our crystals three times, sign up for a particular workshop, or just believe. Also silly are all the emails I’m getting about a “rare” planetary alignment occurring this Valentine’s Day, matching the prophecy from the 60’s musical Hair. I dutifully loved and sang the songs from Hair as a teenager, but I know of no astrological reason for this not-so-rare alignment ushering in the Age of Aquarius overnight. Every day the moon reaches the seventh house for a couple of hours. It’s in the seventh sign (Libra) a dozen or more times a year. Mars conjuncts Jupiter every two years. They’ve aligned in Aquarius twice already since Hair debuted (in 1973 and 1998). And the shift from one astrological age to the next usually spans a hundred years or more. Not that I want to rain on anyone’s Valentine’s Day parade. If you want to thrill to a rare alignment, just study the mood in your lover’s eyes, or the bird landing on the branch, or the way the air is touching your skin right now. If the internet went crazy for unrepeatable miracles like these, a new age would dawn indeed!

The London Daily Mail recently reported that a Salzburg insurance company caused a stir when they posted job openings for certain zodiac signs. Internal research indicated the firm’s most successful employees were born in Capricorn, Taurus, Aquarius, Leo or Aries; they wanted to repeat this success. Fairness advocates were immediately outraged and anti-discrimination authorities began investigating. It’s an odd group of signs. Except for Capricorn and Taurus, they’re not what an astrologer would initially suggest. So what does this mean? That sun signs alone don’t mean much. The firm might have done just as well categorizing their best employees by sock color or preferred breakfast food.
It’s not that astrology is meaningless in hiring decisions. It’s just more complicated. Once I was discriminated against in a job interview because of my zodiac sign. “Tut, tut,” the interviewer wagged his head, noting I was a happy-go-lucky Sagittarian. “We’re looking for hard workers,” he said. He’d completely missed my hard-working Virgo Ascendant and overly responsible Moon/Saturn square. Of course these were treasures to the employer who eventually and happily hired me.

Busy with the usual thoughts, I forgot to celebrate Imbolc. My backyard oak remembered, surprising my house with sudden confetti. For weeks I’ve wondered about this oak. The rest of the neighborhood trees dropped their leaves long ago. Why does my oak keep hanging onto its dried-up soldiers—through rain, wind, and snow? Is it haunted by the past? Is it bound, like me, to old ideas and worn-out expectations? The answer arrived on this pagan midwinter holy day, as the Sun reached 15 Aquarius and we officially turned towards spring. Under a mild wind and blue sky, for thirty minutes, hundreds of dead leaves began floating down. Visible from every window of my house, they called, “You too! Let go! You too!”
