It seems Mars has invited us to ponder his upcoming retrograde—indeed we could say it has already begun, as Mars has been in the degree of his station for nearly a week. The ill-fated cruise of the Costa Concordia was waylaid by Mars—or his emissary, Captain Francesco Shettino, who embodied Mars at his worst: reckless, irresponsible, and cowardly. Tennis star Marcos Baghdatis also found himself overwhelmed by Mars, when in a fit of anger, he destroyed four of his own rackets, two of them new. Mars is retrograde from January 23 to April 13, but the weeks before and after the station may be most volatile. Life slows down—things don’t work, people don’t cooperate, machines behave strangely. We could find ourselves responding with out-of-control frustration, moving too fast or too recklessly. But the key is to do the opposite: slow down and move cautiously.

In his retrograde station, Mars squares Jupiter in my chart. I did not expect him to take shape as an intruder! This week, an unbalanced and angry former friend snuck into my house, stole a couple items, and left the side gate open, so that my dog Jupiter ran free through the streets! Jupiter was eventually found, the police were called, and the house is newly secured. I did a ritual to Mars and made an offering: I gladly paid $99 to the locksmith, whose profession is ruled by Mars.

I know it’s 2012 and there are lots more important things to worry about. But the Moon is always pleased when we take advantage of her numerous small graces. This weekend, she promises that whatever you dye will take its color fabulously well. Whether you’re an artist dyeing textiles or a woman simply coloring her hair, your results will be particularly rich, vivid and long lasting. When the Moon is full, everything in nature is more porous and absorbent; the same is true of water sign Moons. Put them together—a Full Moon in water sign Cancer and voila: intensified color! I hope you have fun with it.

Last night I ate a heavier meal than usual. This morning I slept in. Later I won’t go to the gym as I usually do. It’s solstice time. The sun appears to be standing still as it slowly turns to go back along the horizon line (moving north or south, depending on your hemisphere). This is how we shift into the new season. A lot of people get sick during solstice week, though we don’t need to pause that way. Rather, we can follow the body’s subtle or insistent promptings to slow, tune inward, and when ready, reach out to reconnect with the wheeling planet. Freshly centered within ourselves, we can enjoy the profound delights of sensing the air, listening to the trees, watching the new flight patterns of birds. Something in the body wants to do this; it’s ancient, powerful, and pleasurable. Some people like to sit in meditation on solstice. Others perform ceremony and ritual. Some buy new journals, others select goals for the season, some light candles, others take walks in the park. It doesn’t particularly matter what you do on solstice. It’s the spirit with which you do it that brings the magic. The solstice is a bright jewel on the year’s necklace. Wear it with joy this week.

The eclipse makes this a special “Long Night Moon.” For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere the December Full Moon heralds the coming of Winter Solstice, which is always a good time for sitting alone in the dark. Dark Sitting is a simple yet profound practice. You can do it with or without lighting a candle. I recommend trying both ways. I like closing the practice with a prayer of gratitude to the guardian angels. I rarely think of them but I know they’re with me, especially when I’m in the dark. You have yours too of course. Say something heartfelt and spontaneous. Or recite this traditional Catholic prayer (scroll midpage to “Christian Prayer”). The advantage of using traditional prayers is that the “mana” or power in the words has been nourished by centuries of repetition, particularly when they’re recited in Latin. Or light a small birthday candle and say these words from Draja Mickaharic’s Practice of Magic: “You who are with me in this life as my guide and protector, I express my gratitude to you with this candle which I light for you. I thank you for your loving care and guidance.” Let the candle safely burn until it extinguishes itself.

This eclipse is visible in west and central North America, the islands in the Pacific, Asia, eastern Africa, Iceland and most of Europe. If you’re not able to view it (the time is listed on our home page), you might enjoy “The Moon is My Mistress” from a blogger who watched last year’s winter lunar eclipse with his wife.

Eclipses signal moments of transition, and often disorientation, when things are revealed to be other than what they had seemed. This week’s Solar Eclipse falls in Sagittarius, the sign of higher education, sports, and beliefs. In the past two weeks, two scandals involving universities have sent shock waves through the media.

First, a former defensive coordinator for Pennsylvania State University’s football team was accused of engaging in sexual abuse of children, and his behavior appears to have been covered up by his supervisors. The story has stunned the nation, but has had a particular disorienting effect on the Penn State community, where university football and coach Joe Paterno have long served as a unifying social and even moral nexus. Reporter Michael Winereb, who hails from State College, Pennsylvania (home of Penn State), summed up the stunned reactions of the town in a piece for Grantland (italics mine):

When I saw those televised shots of [coach Joe Paterno's] house on McKee Street, something caught in my throat, a conditioned response to a man I’ve been raised to believe was the moral arbiter of our community. All I can say by way of explanation is that there are people here who will cling to iconography because this is what they’ve always done. That’s what I think is happening here: It’s not that we are condoning child rape, and it’s not that we don’t recognize our obligation to the victims above all else. It’s that we are condemning all that Jerry Sandusky is accused of and trying to make it right while also dealing with this involuntary response to the death throes of a way of life.

Second, videotape emerged of campus police using pepper spray on peaceful Occupy demonstrators at the University of California Davis. The videotape (and waggish collages, like the one above, that insert pepper-spraying cops into works of art) went viral over the weekend, and UC Davis’ Chancellor has met with angry shouts from students and protests, demanding her resignation. The shocking footage of the incident has made UC Davis the latest focal point of the Occupy movement. As an employee of UC San Diego remarked to me yesterday, “I thought campus police were supposed to protect the students, not pepper spray them.”

You may not be involved with a university, a sports team, or the Occupy movement – but with this week’s eclipse in Sagittarius, you’re asked to examine your core beliefs. When people and institutions that we trust are revealed to have feet of clay, what is left for us to believe in? Fortunately, Sagittarius the optimist offers this: We can always trust what we know to be true and ethical in ourselves.

Today, just eleven days past the end of the Mayan calendar (which occurred on October 28, according to some calculations), a large asteroid is hurtling past us, coming within 200,000 miles of our surface, making it closer than the Moon. How nice that it’s just sailing by instead of heading toward us. Life is full of such small graces.

Every Full Moon is special, particularly when you bring a little magic to the evening. This is the first Full Moon after the change-of-season brought by the Equinox. It’s a good time draw down extra blessings from the Moon. On the morning of the Full Moon, write down this question: “What would I most love to achieve in the coming weeks?” Return to this question throughout the day and record all your answers. Before moonrise (just after sunset), select the aspiration that inspires the greatest excitement or strongest devotion. After the Moon has fully risen, find a secluded spot and stand under the Moon. Scrub your skin as though you were bathing in moonbeams. Keep your eyes on the Moon and when you feel ready, ask Luna to help make your dream come true. Watch the Moon for a sign. If she remains clear, that’s a “Yes!” If she brightens and her light intensifies, that’s a strong “Yes!” If a cloud passes over the Moon, you may need to re-think or refine your aspiration. You can try again the following night, as the Full Moon energy lasts for a couple of days.

Today is the Equinox, one of the eight sabbats—or holy days—on the wheel of the year. In Chichen Itza, they still gather to watch the serpent slither down the steps of “El Castillo.” Designed by astronomer priests, the Western-facing steps of this ancient Mayan pyramid and temple were lined with specially cut stones. As the setting Equinox Sun hits them, they cast a pattern of shadow and light that makes it look like a golden snake is undulating down the stairs (or perhaps it is indeed the mighty Kulkulcan, an ancient Mayan leader who became a serpent god here long ago.) At Equinox, day and night are in equal measure, with the Sun rising near 7:00 am and setting near 7:00 pm. Among the ancients this was a great signal that the year was turning. It’s a charged moment: tune in. You may not have a snake slithering across the street, but you can still sense some of the ancient awe and reverence. And if you’d like some extra inspiration, watch this video! Equinox at Chichen Itza</a<\>

The following is from guest blogger, Julie Pittman:

On the day of the Capricorn Full Moon I kept feeling something tugging at me, filling me with a desire for something… but what? Glancing at the laptop on my big wooden desk, I reached out… and found myself reading your “Drinking the Moon” article. It was just what I was after! Under my kitchen sink sat a very large Mason Jar with a lid that felt perfect. I filled it with fresh filtered Maui water and went back into the night to find a special place to collect my moonbeams!

The next part was the hardest—trying to turn off my inner chatter. What if someone drives by…how long is this going to take… what are those kids doing making all that noise in that room…what about those bills I didn’t pay …why are my dogs barking…sure hope my neighbors don’t come home! But I persisted. I breathed the light of the Moon into every cell of my body, from my toes all the way up to the crown of my head. When I was quite full, the chatter receded. I was feeling very tingly at this point, excited to start my journey.

Touching my right hand lightly on top of the cool metal lid I started circling it slowly around, with all my senses sensing. How beautifully the water sparkled in the jar. Everything around me was being washed in brilliant light, even the crumbling asphalt in the old road by my home. The intensity of the glow grew with each circle as my hand drew around and around the water. After nine circles, I touched my right hand softly with my left and could feel the energy transfer between them. With my left hand I made nine counter-clockwise circles, as the swirling energy kept growing. I formed a triangle with my two hands over what was now a cauldron of energy, and waited.

My only desire was for guidance. I took a deep breath and looked up. There was Antares in the constellation of Scorpio beaming right at me—straight into me! Mesmerized I could only stare back. Instantly we were exchanging energy. The heart of the scorpion bore right into my chest and as I breathed in, my heart swelled and grew warm. I felt so at peace on this big miraculous planet in this gyrating traveling universe. Aaah… through the triangle of my hands, my jar of electrified water was collecting moonbeams by the thousands.

I looked up at the Moon, so soft and wonderful, like a mother’s embrace. Then, one last gift from the cosmos—a cloud floated across the Moon. It looked like a giant flying angel, with wings spread out behind her covering a quarter of the night sky. It took my breath away. I carefully placed the jar in my garden to receive the Moon’s blessings all night long. The next morning, a little after six, I sleepily went out and brought a very cool ‘energized’ jar of water back into the kitchen and set it on the breadboard. My intuitive desire was to drink some right then and there–it felt so alive and so full of energy; instead I waited to share it with my family and friends that charming day.

I poured out precious little amounts into beautiful cobalt blue glasses for my two sons and their girlfriends and child, my big brother Chris, my friend Mike from long ago who used to fix my hot tub, my writing partner Maggie and her whole family with four kids, my ex who I wasn’t too happy with at that time for overstaying his welcome in my home… even him. I never tasted water more refreshing in my whole life.
