December 2021 is busy with celestial potential. How to take advantage? Select which transit(s) call to you and get on their wavelength now.
At its birth astrology was not about prediction. It was about collaboration. It was designed to increase people’s abundance and happiness by teaching them how to harmonize with the Greater-than-Human Forces within and around their world.
It still works that way. Sky events are omens. They’re symbols describing the flow of energy ahead. Your part in the magic requires awakening an appropriate heartfelt intention (or in Sanskrit, the sankalpa) that will successfully organize your response to the divine potentials of the time.
This is basically how you can use astrology to co-create a prosperous life. Consider the symbolism of what’s coming, then organize yourself appropriately. It’s a game of right consciousness and action.
December 3: Total Solar Eclipse (12 Sagittarius)
Eclipses are change-makers. Their reputation comes from the way they can abruptly shut doors and open new ones. But it’s not always like that.
Twice a year we get solar eclipses. These indicate wobbly times that can break things loose if they need to. Like if you’re in a relationship you’ve been dying to leave and you suddenly learn your partner has been having an affair. It wasn’t how you wanted it to happen, but that’s not the point. Change demands movement.
To me the most interesting question for this eclipse is not what will happen—but what already has. This is the last in a string of eclipses since June 2020 in the signs Sagittarius and Gemini–representing truth, justice, speech, religion, journalism, and the work of the higher and lower minds—all of which has been in a whirlwind during these past months.
But start more personally. Look at the pair of houses in your chart where Sagittarius and Gemini fall. This is the area of your life these eclipses have been stimulating. Look closely. Have any doors opened or closed here? To vibe with this eclipse, think about what’s changed over the past year and a half. Does anything more need to be done?
There’s your sankalpa.

December 19: Venus retrograde (26 Capricorn)
I love this transit. If you took my Venus Retrograde Challenge (in May 2020), you’ll be happy to know it’s here again.
This transit was also a favorite of the ancient Sumerians, who dutifully recorded it year after year. The clay tablets bearing their observations of this planet’s unique underworld journey eventually became the first astrology book of the ancient world, The Venus Tablets. The Mesopotamians saw Venus’ retrograde as Innana/Ishtar’s brief descent into the underworld, where she was first stripped of power before rising even stronger than before. It was and still is a potent time of transformation. The retrograde is approximately 40 days long, an interval recognized by today’s behaviorists as an auspicious interval for making lasting changes.
As with eclipses, astrologers typically recommend looking at the house(s) where Venus will be retrograde. Yet this is a mental approach (overly used by astrology). The Divine Feminine journey is all about embodiment. For that, you need to make a good connection with the living Venus archetype first. You need to see and sense Her presence in your world. If you succeed at that, no worries. You can trust that She’ll set the appropriate agenda. By the end of December, you’ll know what your transformation journey needs to be about.
For now, I suggest starting with the sky. The planet Venus is exquisite now, at the peak of her radiance as the Evening Star. She’s also out of bounds–singularly placed–beyond the usual circumference of the planets. As you observe her, you can wordlessly behold. Or you can think loosely of the Venusian qualities of love, creativity, abundance and happiness in your life. Let this slowly work on you.
To deepen the connection, think of the longings of your natal Venus (again, you can calculate your chart here). Whatever house she’s in, your birth Venus will have a say in every retrograde. It’s She who decides decides your happiness.
This is a perfect time to consult your Venus Unleashed report if you have one–or to order one if you don’t!
I’ll officially post my article about the Venus Challenge at the next new moon, but if you’d like a sneak peek, go here.
December 23/24: 3rd Saturn/Uranus square (11 Aquarius)
This is the third and final perfection of this transit, occurring February 17 (at 7 Taurus/Aquarius); June 14/15 (at 13 Taurus/Aquarius); and December 23/24 (at 11 Taurus/Aquarius).
2021’s defining aspect, the Saturn/Uranus square, is tough, gritty, and hard. It pits one unyielding sky lord against the other. Rock against rock. You can see their collision in the tribalism around the world this year. Also the seeming to-the-death battle between authoritarianism and democracy. People are fiercely in their own corners.
But on the flip side–these tough energies are great for building. And that’s how you can put a global transit to use personally. For manifesting something you know will be difficult. This square promotes frustration and resistance–also strength, perseverance and great accomplishment.
For Act One, back in February I encouraged you to conjure six impossible dreams for this transit. As a gesture of sympathetic magic, I invited you to perform something slightly challenging. For example, with the paper on which you wrote your six impossible dreams, you could fashion an origami crane.
For Act Two, I invited you to edit your impossible dreams to a manageable set of goals, constructing this time, a sculpture of intricately balanced rocks.
Now, in the weeks before Act Three, it’s the appropriate time to review your journey so far.
A word about this review: no judgment is allowed. Whenever you set a destination with the gods’ help—whether you reach it or not—you will receive valuable information. This is the secret of the Alchemist’s Stone. The capacity to find the gold in your experience. And nothing is more important than seeing what happened when you set a ritual intention. You don’t want to walk away without getting all the shiny ore.
If you missed the two earlier rituals, no worries. You can still play. The passenger who boards the train at its next-to-the-last stop, still reaches the destination. You can find the first two rituals here:

Thank you! I love everything you write and put out there for us to chew on.
You’re welcome … I love hearing my words are food for you.
Dear Dana, I have waited for this article about the last part of the Saturn/Uranus square. I am daily watching my altar created during these rituals. With your precious help, I was able to “travel” through this square with another kind of energy and it feels good every time I am looking at my balance stones!
Wonderful to hear! I made the “interesting” decision to put my balance stones outside in the elements–which meant the wind knocked down the stack several times. It was a perfect mirror for the challenges I took on this year–restacking the stones was a great metaphor for my developing endurance.. But hard stuff is hard!
Hi Dana
I have a question that has baffled me for a long time and no astrologer has yet to give me an answer,
My north node in Taurus and my true node in Gemini, I am cancer sun and moon, with Gemini ascendant, color me confuse?!
Thank goodness astrology is an art of symbols, not mathematical factors. It certainly can be confusing to add up a bunch of “factors,” and in many ways, it’s irrelevant. You’ll find the north node that’s true for you in your own experience. Which is the more relevant destination point for you this lifetime? Into the world of security (Taurus) or into the world of education and experience (Gemini)? Your soul isn’t sitting there wishing you’d see an astrologer so you’d know what to do with your life! This information is already hardwired. What’s exciting about astrology is that it helps us put a name to things we sense are true. Good astrology is illuminating, the opposite of confusing! Enjoy finding the many flavors of you.
Dear Dana,
I have done your Venus and Moon reports, and read your columns regularly. Thank you for your wonderful, informative, well written works. They are a pleasure to read!
God bless.
Hi Mary! It’s fun to see your name in the comments. I hope all is well in your world.
