Our great-grandmothers spent more time in the kitchen than we do, baking mouth-watering breads, cakes, cookies and pies. Yet the yeast, baking powders and baking soda our ancestors used were inferior to the products we buy today. This meant they had to bring more patience, art, and skill into their kitchens. The smart ones also knew how to leverage the Moon.
Just as gardeners discovered the advantage of working on certain Moon days, so did our baking ancestors.
Moon Baking Basics
- Moon tradition says it’s better to bake when the Moon is waxing as energy is rising. The days of the new moon through gibbous are awesome if what you’re baking needs to expand or rise.
- Favor cardinal moon signs (Capricorn, Cancer, Aries, and Libra) because of their “action” quality. They improve the action of your leavening agent–and any magical qualities you want to manifest in the outer world.
- Water sign moons (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are ideal, perhaps for the same reasons gardeners love them. These are rich, moist and fruitful days.
Baking Treats with Magical Qualities
One of my favorite magical practices is charming my food and drinks. This takes intention and a little skill. But the best way to start is by combining your intentions with those of the day’s moon sign. To start, for baking, keep your focus on water and cardinal sign moons. Which would you choose for baking the following treats?
As with all Moon rules, I recommend experimenting and checking the results for yourself. Years ago, before I could sense any difference in Moon sign days, I would have thought the answers were nonsense. But not anymore!
