It’s glorious to witness the power of a planet in its own sign, as is the case with Saturn in Capricorn. He’s on everyone’s mind these days. He’s in your fresh desire to be more focused, organized, and effective. He’s the newly fierce cultural call for accountability in positions of power. Saturn-in-Capricorn is inspiring the dreams of hopefully better future leaders.
But archetypes resonate in a thousand ways. Even as a planet’s positive themes keep writing themselves into the news, in the dark alleys of the collective unconscious, its shadows will run. So while you might be feeling newly empowered by Saturn – curiously – you may also notice the rising of some unwelcome emotions, like guilt, self-doubt, and fear. Saturn-in-Capricorn is strengthening these too. It’s just the nature of this archetype. It runs the energies of power and helplessness. It guides effective action and depression.
This archetype won’t be out of the collective soup until 2020. So, particularly if you’re an energy sensitive, you should put these emotions at the top of your practice list. These are the years when you can develop new mastery in hosting your own guilt, self-doubt, and fear. Here are a couple pointers.
First recognize that all your emotions have value. Guilt, Self Doubt, and Fear are Accountability’s agents. They serve to humble, restrain, and repurpose you, capacities healthy humans need. At the first arising of Saturn’s darker feelings, be direct. Ask yourself, “Is there somewhere I’m evading my responsibility?” If you get a credible “yes,” then deal with it. Problem solved. The emotion has done its job. Ignoring or running away from the feeling and/or situation, just unsettles the nervous system. It’s like you’re perpetually running a low grade emotional fever.
But what if you don’t get a credible “yes”? What if you’re feeling anxious and you don’t know why? Likely this is one of your emotional habits. You’ve fallen into your familiar stew of Saturn self-judgements. The deft tool in this case is recognizing that you don’t always have to believe your feelings. Keep the mental and emotional bodies from merging. You’re under the spell of old, undigested emotions. Allowing them space to breathe lets them dissipate.
With the mind thus disconnected from the feeling, you can now change the channel. First, mark the sensory details of your guilt — how it sits like cold oatmeal in your heart—or churns the stomach—or otherwise sinks your spirit. These are its energetic coordinates. Now you know where the energy is running.
Next remind yourself of a time when you experienced one of the positive Capricorn Saturn emotions. These happier feelings will run on the same tracks as your doubt and fear. So recall a time when you felt confident, important, prestigious, masterful. I can summon the feeling I had as a corporate manager earning a six figure income. Even now, in Oregon, decades later, this memory can tilt a negative Saturn mood skyward.
You can prepare your list of Saturn victories ahead of time. You don’t need a lot. It’s quality, not quantity. Your positive memories will gently reproduce the same feelings in your present system. All you need to do is turn up the volume. Amplify these happier feelings.
Always with emotional practice, breathe. Emotions get stuck in bodies that anxiously hold their breath. And then thought gets captured and your day is ruined. It’s actually quite simple to turn things around. Notice the emotional signal. Inquire into it. Locate the coordinates of its sensation. And replace that with more uplifting sensations.
You already have everything you need to succeed.
