From the “Moon Lovers” series
by Dana Gerhardt
“Never plant seeds on a Leo moon—your sprouts will wither.” You wouldn’t think this moon lover knows a thing about working in gardens. Or anywhere else for that matter. Her house is a sumptuous castle. Awash In a bright blue dress, with vibrant leonine hair, she fills the space so regally, even the air seems to think she’s a Queen. Yet when she speaks, it’s with such genuine warmth and interest, you’re the one who feels special. “Leo days are hot and dry. If you’re heating a house or a cottage for the first time of the season, this is the best moontime. The warmth spreads quickly through the house, the damp runs away and you’ll feel cozy all winter long.” Her expressive hands draw pictures in the swirling air in front of you. “But if you’re inspired to add new color to your house, don’t have the painters come. It’s not a good day for that. The paint will dry too quickly. It will get brittle and peel.” She opens the garden door. “It’s nice to work outdoors on a fire moon; but just dig, trim, or weed. Roots and branches will give up without a fight! Lawns mowed will last awhile.” She laughs, her eyes remember something. “If your dog drops a ball or slipper at your feet, you must accept the invitation! Everybody needs to play during Leo.” She suddenly taps you on the wrist, “Tag, you’re it!” And runs away, laughing down her spacious halls. “This will be good for your heart!”

Opening nights and theatrical events are tailor-made for the Moon in Leo. It’s also a great time for anything involving children – from a soccer game to a birthday party or a benefit walk for kids. Your childlike nature will come out too, so make sure you have some fun activities scheduled to offset any work obligations. There’s a sexy, romantic vibe now, so schedule some quality time with your partner or if single, go out and flirt! Are you touching the Moon?
It’s one thing to read about the Moon, but another to tune into her with energetic sensitivity. The first method is mental; the second is sensuous and intuitive (which is of course the preferred way to grasp the Moon). Lunar intuition is a natural ability that can be developed with practice. Developing mine, I was inspired by a friend’s report of spending an idyllic summer in the forest. Nestled in nature, without the chaos of the competing mechanical rhythms, her sensitivity became so refined, she felt it whenever the Moon changed signs.
Nature is everywhere. Even in our concrete and cyber jungles, we can sense her influence. At least once with the Moon in this sign, give yourself a 15-minute luxury of stillness. Quiet your thoughts. Observe the energy—how are things moving? Tune into the texture of the atmosphere floating around you. Feel its sensation on your skin. Describe what you feel, even if it’s so subtle you think you’re making it up. Over time your sensitivity and discernment will increase. In a month, you sense this sign again.
A fire sign Moon, key qualities for Leo are hot and dry. Periodically repeat the phrase “hot and dry.” This will help to lead your awareness to the right sensory cues—perhaps your lips feel dry, or there’s a raspy, burning sensation in your throat, moisturizer doesn’t absorb into your skin so quickly, or the leaves of your houseplants may seem brittle. What else do you notice? Repeat the “hot/dry” mantra and record your observations; test them at the next fire sign Moon.
“Leo represents an ecstatically alive and joyous life force. Leo honors all things born of love: children, art, visions, and inspirations. Leo wants what is best for the community and loves to inspire people to be their best. The ruler of Leo is the sun, the heart chakra. As a result, dreams of one’s true nature, one’s innocent lust for life, come at this time. Running off to join the circus is an example of a Leo dream..”~ Connie Cockrell Kaplan
