It happens for a few weeks, same time every year. You hit a slump. The wind goes out of your sails and doing what’s usual feels oddly overwhelming. At the sound of the morning alarm, you only want more sleep. During these weeks you’re more vulnerable to allergies and infections. You’re more easily wounded. Your confidence dips. You wonder what’s wrong.
Nothing! This is just your annual scheduled downtime, when the Sun transits through your 12th House. These are the rich “fall apart” weeks that precede your annual rebirth. I’ll tell you how to find these dates below. But first, think about your relationship to the year when you were a child. Was there one month that was your least favorite, when you often found yourself feeling bored, low energy, or even depressed?
During the Sun’s 12th house passage, nature is actually taking care of you. Under her intelligent direction, your inner system goes offline, so that it can perform a host of self-maintenance activities. You’re tired because a lot is happening inside! Your body-mind is releasing accumulated garbage from the previous 12 months. Inner organs, nerves, and pathways are being cleansed as your psychic batteries recharge.
You don’t need to do anything—what’s happening is a natural process. You can best facilitate it by slowing down. Stop pushing yourself. Take a sick day even if you’re not actually sick. Discover the delicious art of doing nothing. Don’t take my word for it. Try this and see! There’s something very pleasurable about allowing yourself this much needed break.
The more you rest during these weeks, the greater will be your vitality next month—when the Sun transits your 1st House. This is typically everyone’s favorite month, when we feel energized and excited about our possibilities. But now you know the secret. That gift comes from the activity of your 12th House passage.
Find Your 12th House Month
- When does your annual downtime begin? Locate the sign/degree on your 12th house cusp. (If you don’t have your chart, visit our free zodiac playground, Chart Play, to see a copy.)
- Match the sign on the cusp to the season. When the Sun reaches your 12th house, what time of year is it? (Check the table below.)
- When does this 12th house passage end? Find the sign/degree on your 1st house cusp and match that to the season.
You can loosely locate the day for each event—the Sun entering and leaving the 12th house—using the degrees on the cusps. The Sun changes signs around the 20/21st of each month; it moves about a degree a day.
If your 12th house cusp is 5 degrees of Aries, then the Sun enters your 12th house on the fifth day of spring (which is around the 25th/26th of March). If your 1st house cusp is at 2 degrees of Taurus, then your 1st house rebirth will occur in early “mid-spring,” around April 23.
