Ask the Oracle – August 20, 2013

By Julia Bondi

I have been feeling a great desire towards public service but when I start brainstorming I just come up with a sense of discouragement. I feel like I’ve got a lot of energy bottled up – creative energy, service to others energy, healing energy – and I feel that if I don’t find an outlet soon, I will either implode or get sick (with depression or cancer or something). I was born April 10, 1968. I don’t know how to resolve this and I would love someone to point me in the right direction. Thank you and very best regards. (MF)

Bursting with energy…yes, 5 of your 10 natal planets in Aries is surely a lot of energy which must find an expression or outlet. Over a long period of time no outlet could lead to painful consequences but you are a long way from that outcome. Clearly, what you are feeling is transiting Uranus in Aries right in the midst of your Aries stellium (Chiron, Venus, Mercury, Saturn, Sun, along with the North Node of the Moon) intentionally stirring up your body, mind and spirit. While Uranus was in the 8th house, its purpose was to arouse the very desire and energy you are describing, however, now that Uranus has moved into the 9th house for a long stay, you do need to find a direction for this knowing that there is something you need to do in this world – a meaning, a purpose for this lifetime.

Two reasons that you don’t know how to resolve this dilemma are the conflict between those 5 planets in fire, your excitement and energy, and your 4 planets in earth bouncing you from that excitement into discouragement and the current incomplete transit of Saturn to your natal Mars, the ruler of your Aries planets. Saturn conjunct Mars does restrain and restrict your motivation, energy, direction which feels depressing and discouraging but it also prevents you from dashing off in the wrong direction as it holds you in place to deepen your motivation, to explore possible directions in order to discover that one which is your path, to prepare yourself to contribute and to allow all the circumstances in the world to align with you and your development. Patience is crucial for all human beings especially for fire signs. Whew, transiting Saturn will release your natal Mars in early October which should ease some of your impatience and discouragement though I don’t think you are likely to be actively living and serving others in the way you eventually will be before 2014.

At the moment your progressed Moon is moving into an opposition to your natal Neptune requiring 3 to 4 months of meditation, listening, setting of intention and watching for synchronicity to guide your life. In 2014, your solar arc progressed Mars will square your natal Uranus opening the door to your new path as transiting Uranus reaches your natal Saturn leading you to your new work/contribution. You are moving ever closer to the direction you are seeking. In the meantime, I would suggest you, as an Aries, who needs to act, volunteer somewhere that just needs help – serve where you are, where you can trusting that the clarity you seek will soon appear.

I was born September 3, 1949. My question is: I retired on July 31, 2012 after working for 44 years and I am struggling to adjust. I am able to find things to fill the time but I don’t feel intellectually stimulated or challenged as I did at work and have no sense of purpose and am often bored. Is there anything obvious that I should be involved in that will fulfill me and make me feel useful and productive again? Many thanks. (KB)

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are all knocking at your door this year and next year describing an opening, evolution, initiation in your life that is far larger than finding things to fill your days which is why you are not satisfied nor feeling the sense of purpose you rightfully seek. Transiting Neptune is conjuncting your Midheaven, the career or contribution in the world angle; transiting Pluto is conjuncting your Descendant opposing your Ascendant while transiting Uranus opposes your natal Neptune. It is important to expand your scope of possibilities beyond any of your previous expectations since none of them will apply after these changes in your interests, awareness and purpose. It would be easy and reasonable to look at your retirement after so many years and your natal Sun/Saturn conjunction in Virgo and just assume that you need to either learn to relax, to enjoy this new time and rhythm in your life or that you need to find lots of ways to be busy and productive without pay. However, those easy perspectives are not accurate when the 3 trans-personal planets are beginning to point the way to a life you have yet to imagine.

All that said, what can you do in the midst of this transitional time and soul awakening. First, embrace boredom out of which creativity, imagination, ease, peacefulness and opening can emerge. Secondly, trust that Neptune is leading you to new accomplishments and contributions even though you have no idea  how or when. Work with Neptune by taking up a meditation practice or a nature practice (long walks drinking in nature and her teachings) or an artistic practice learning to paint/photograph/sculpt/write or whatever other inspiration may call you or a spiritual practice of your choice. This is a time of exploration. Know that both Neptune at your career angle and Pluto leaving your 6th house of work indicate that retiring now was just right even though your new life is not yet fully born.

As transiting Pluto moves into the 7th house you are now meant to be out in the world not in an office working quietly. Out in the world may mean time to explore the world around you, at home or through travel farther from home, or engaging in your community through joining groups, meeting people, committing to volunteering or advocacy. If you are interested in a new relationship, Pluto at the 7th house cusp, that is now possible as well.

Born with both Venus and Neptune in the 5th house stimulated by transiting Uranus, it is time to explore your creative, spiritual abilities even if you think you don’t have any. Remember that the 5th house is also related to fun, play and joy. Life is going to get ever more interesting for you over these next few years leading you into a Jupiter initiated life as transiting Jupiter conjuncts your Ascendant this month beginning a new 12 year cycle of renewal. Notice that 7 of your 10 basic planets are below the horizon making this journey internal and personal which is where your attention should focus using all activities to develop your inner awareness which will lead you forward into your new life. Good luck!

Astrologers use a variety of house systems, or methods of dividing up the sky into twelve sections. I use the Porphyry house system; another popular house system is Placidus (this is the default on https://astro.com). If the chart I send you looks different from what you are used to seeing, then likely a system other than Porphyry was used. Whole signs, Equal House, Regiomantus, and Campanus are examples of other systems. If you find all of this confusing, do not worry. It is likely not critical to your report.

m  Conjunction:  Like peas in a pod, planets in conjunction tend to come from the same place. They act together, but it’s also hard to tell them apart. This aspect can increase talent, focus, and intensity (“two are better than one”). Or one planet can disappear as the other dominates. Their connection feels so natural, it’s easy to think everyone blends these planetary energies just as you do—but mostly, they don’t!.

p  Sextile:  Planets in sextile are compatible, though without any fireworks. This aspect doesn’t demand your attention. It quietly presents an opportunity. You can join these archetypal forces. Donna Cunningham has called this the “Oh, that!” aspect, because that’s generally what her clients say when she describes their benefits.  To get the most from sextiles you need to actively work them.

q  Square:  Squares are wild and wonderful—but difficult too. The power struggle between these planets was likely defined in your youth, when they were impossibly challenging. People are usually aware of their squares. They force the issues that make you to grow. And that’s their gift. They ensure you learn your lessons. When you rise to the occasion, they bless you with energy, action, and success.

r  Trine:  Michael Munkasey has dubbed this the “goddess aspect” because it’s so lovely. Identifying talents you may have perfected in a previous life, trines can bring you joy. There’s a nice flow of energy between planets in trine. They support and reinforce each another. But without any struggle, you might take them for granted—neither using nor developing their gifts. An unattended trine can sometimes trick you into negative behaviors.

t  Inconjunct/Quincunx:  Your quincunx planets are innately incompatible. Bringing them into harmonious expression requires constant adjustments. This can be stressful, also motivating. You’ve got to keep changing your process, opinions or attitude—which promotes highly creative solutions.

u  Opposition:  They say opposites attract—and planets in opposition are never far from each other, though they’re constantly bickering. You may be triggered into awareness of this aspect by other people who seem to resist or undermine you.  An opposition can make you feel uncertain, insecure, or discontent, until you can accept and see yourself in both energies. Typically people find it easier to identify with one side and project the other onto unsuspecting others in the outer world.
