Miami-based four-year-olds Zuri Copeland and Jia Sarnicola hit it off instantly when they met at school, and have been best friends ever since. The girls, who just turned ten, actually believe themselves to be twins – and they became instant celebrities when their story hit the media in 2017.
Unsurprisingly, both Zuri and Jia have the Sun (as well as assertive Mars and boundary-pushing Jupiter) in Gemini, sign of the Twins. Born just two days apart in 2013 (Jia on June 3, Zuri on June 5), they always celebrate their birthdays together and dress alike whenever possible.
“They will tell you that they are twins, and they have a long list of reasons to back it up,” said Jia’s mom Ashley. Also, she noted, their shared Gemini traits are unmistakable. “They are super outgoing, well-spoken, intelligent, and not afraid to tell you what they want.”
The girls do have different Moon signs – Jia’s is in quick, fiery Aries, while Zuri’s is in more measured Taurus. But they are otherwise eerily similar. Unfortunately, some kids have been eager to point out that they can’t be twins because they don’t have the same skin color. The first time this happened, Jia burst into tears. But she still managed a brave retort: “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” she told the disbeliever. “We’re twins because we share the same soul.”
Which hints at a deep and mysterious truth: We are all one. No matter how separate things or people might appear, we’re made of the same star stuff. This theme of indivisible unity is illustrated in the myth of Castor and Pollox, Gemini’s two brightest stars. Likened to twin boys – one mortal, the other immortal – the brothers were inseparable. And when the mortal Castor was killed, Pollux was inconsolable. He begged Zeus to allow him to die so he could rejoin his beloved brother. Moved by Pollux’s appeal, Zeus agreed. And throughout eternity they shine brightly in the heavens, forever united in brotherly love.
The upcoming Gemini New Moon (June 17, 9:36 pm PDT) reminds us of our need for sisterly and brotherly connections, whether within our own families or wherever we find them. Gemini is a light-hearted air sign, which wants to explore and have fun. The Sun and Moon make a tight square to dreamy Neptune, blurring boundaries, which could lead to a blissful sense of oneness. However, Neptune is also associated with forgetfulness, fatigue, and failing to set necessary boundaries. Still, the god of the sea wants us to let go of whatever may be holding us back, be carried away by the waves, and rest.
The New Moon conjuncts Juno, asteroid of marriage and other close partnerships. This accentuates the urge to bond with another. Also, because Gemini is a dual sign, there may be a choice to make between two different people or paths. To help us make a wise decision, the Moon’s dispositor Mercury, riding high in his own sign of Gemini, is squaring Saturn in Pisces. Setting boundaries and making temporary sacrifices for a long-term goal are favored. Mercury just hopped into Gemini on June 11 after over two months in slow-moving Taurus (due to his extended retrograde period). So he’s rarin’ to go, but Saturn (stationary retrograde at the New Moon and thus extra powerful) is warning him to take his time, to not blurt out something he may later regret, or to judge someone else for having divergent views. This particularly applies to those of us with the Sun or Ascendant in Mercury-ruled Gemini and Virgo.
Gemini is the sign of the writer. Journaling would be a great New Moon activity, as would writing a poem or joining a book club. This lunation wants us to feel connected, to ourselves and others. Maybe that means becoming a better friend to yourself. Or, it could motivate you to reach out to someone you feel a connection with. Like Pollux, you may be missing a close companion, and have the urge to reunite – even across time and space. Or, like Jia and Zuri, you could be celebrating your twin soul status – even if others don’t always get it. Most of all, this New Moon wants us to remember that in our hearts, we’re all one.
