From the “Moon Lovers” series
by Dana Gerhardt
The wise moon-mad neighbor you wish you had, who really knows what moon signs mean, hollers over the fence, “Moon in Capricorn today.” She circles her knees this way and that to keep them limber and strong. Earlier she took a stiff brush to her skin to stimulate the circulation. She took a tonic to a friend whose rheumatism would be acting up. Now she is busy at the ground. “Root day,” she mumbles. “Good for turning the soil.” She notices you staring at her. “Get yourself down to business! Can’t you tell what this day is for?” It feels earthy and humid, like the air somehow weighs more today. “Find your courage! Claim your authority! Build for your future! Make your ancestors proud!” She looks you up in down; then returns to her garden. “Listen to your body too. It could crave salt today—or be undone by it. Depends on what’s already in your system.” She is hitting the soil with her spade. “Come back next Capricorn moon and tell me what you’ve found out.” You do an inward check. There is something you want to do today, but it scares you a little. Resolve to use this moon to take yourself one step closer.

More Capricorn Strategies
by Simone Butler
Because Capricorn is a take-charge, focused cardinal sign, this is a good time to begin work or health-related projects. Weight loss and fitness regimens stand a fighting chance if begun at a Moon in Capricorn; your willpower will be stronger than usual. Capricorn loves to build, so any renovations, home-based building projects or new businesses begun now should go well, unless Mercury is in retrograde or the Moon is void. For more lunar wisdom, see Simone’s book, Moon Power: Lunar Rituals for Connecting with your Inner Goddess.
Are you touching the Moon?
It’s one thing to read about the Moon, but another to tune into her with energetic sensitivity. The first method is mental; the second is sensuous and intuitive (which is of course the preferred way to grasp the Moon). Lunar intuition is a natural ability that can be developed with practice. Developing mine, I was inspired by a friend’s report of spending an idyllic summer in the forest. Nestled in nature, without the chaos of the competing mechanical rhythms, her sensitivity became so refined, she felt it whenever the Moon changed signs.
Nature is everywhere. Even in our concrete and cyber jungles, we can sense her influence. At least once with the Moon in this sign, give yourself a 15-minute luxury of stillness. Quiet your thoughts. Observe the energy—how are things moving? Tune into the texture of the atmosphere floating around you. Feel its sensation on your skin. Describe what you feel, even if it’s so subtle you think you’re making it up. Over time your sensitivity and discernment will increase. In a month, you sense this sign again.
An earth sign Moon, key qualities for Capricorn are cold and dry. Think of cool stone. Train your senses on density, solidity, immobility. Your eyes may instinctively land on heavier objects, or be drawn downward, scanning the earth rather than the sky. Appreciate the cool stillness in the air. At least once during this Moon, touch the earth– lie on the ground and absorb its energy. Notice how your mood may be following the day’s sensations. Earth Moons can bring melancholy or inertia—or ground you, promoting a solid, practical approach. How does it feel to you?
“Capricorn dreams may be authoritarian and depict power over, as well as service to, nature. Capricorn rules the bones—the framework of the body. Because we download information into our bones, dreams when the moon is in Capricorn may evoke memory stored in our bones. Similarly, Mother Earth downloads information into her skeletal system—the minerals. Capricorn dreams may call up deep information or visualize the beauty of the mineral world. Capricorn also rules the knees. As a result, Capricorn dreams may be humbling and remind us to serve others.” ~ Connie Cockrell Kaplan
