Sacred Vedic texts say that if the Goddess Devi closes her eyes for even a second, the entire universe disappears.
This is not a preposterous claim. Something like this happens every time we lose our connection to the Divine Feminine—the Great Mama Field. We can fall into a world that feels dull, unkind, and strangely empty, as though something essential has gone missing. Even our own significance can fade. We feel unsupported—as though we’ve been dropped into a life that no longer holds us.
The Full Moon offers a way back.
You don’t need special equipment; everything required is already inside. This sensing lives in your body, shaped by the long intelligence of your ancestors. Sitting quietly under a Full Moon begins to stir that knowing. To go further, you engage your imagination—the subtle faculty that knows how to find its way home. Under the Full Moon, when I imagine myself submerged in the field of the Great Mother, something shifts around me. The air grows thicker, more alive. A quiet presence gathers around me, as though I’ve stepped into a living womb that was waiting all along.
In some circles, this practice is known as Drawing Down the Moon. But the metaphysics of that phrase has never quite felt right to me. We aren’t pulling a distant body down to us. Rather, we’re opening the doors of our perception to better mingle with an energy that’s always here: the all-pervasive, nurturing field of the Great Mother that holds not just me, but all living species on Earth, and likely beyond.
Imagination helps. I “see” a glowing orb of energy surrounding me. Feeling into this, I sense how it’s receptive and alive with feminine intelligence, the divine algorithms of gathering, soothing, cleansing, healing, and holding. After breathing with this for a while, I feel for the smaller outlines of myself in this field. How am I today? Like the Great Mother, I listen. Have you ever noticed how some people, perhaps even you at times, run around telling everyone the same story again and again? This is a sign of having temporarily lost your Feminine Intelligence, the ability to listen to and comfort yourself.
So that’s where you begin. How are you feeling today? Only then can the Goddess’s transformations take place. If I’m feeling lonely, I can honor that, and then, at some point a wave of connection and solace pours in. If I feel sad, I can open up my grief, let it out, and once emptied, discover myself being held, feeling safe and soothed. These aren’t just fantasies or metaphors, but actual sensations. There is something beyond me–something benevolent and vast–that actually cares about me. My heart softens, and so does the world.
Nestled inside my imaginary moon, my emotions rearrange themselves. My breathing softens. I become more patient with all that I can’t understand. My trust in life returns—not as a belief, but as an experience. This Great Mama field has resources. In her womb, I become better than I was. New thoughts arise without forcing. Familiar tensions dissolve. Something in my past might resolve. A new possibility may open. I feel safe again.
I know what it’s like to be supported.
Just as Devi can dissolve a world by closing her eyes, She can bring one forth by opening them. Under the Full Moon, you are invited into that same creative act: first imagine, then feel for her presence in the space around you. With practice, this becomes more natural. Each Full Moon gives us another chance to remember, to gather ourselves back into wholeness. It’s a simple Moon skill–and a powerful one.
