Lots of us are wishing for a better world these days. Gemini is one of four zodiac signs ruling magic (the other three are water signs Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces). As an air sign, Gemini oversees mind magic, making this a perfect new moon for a magical spell. Goddess knows we need magic. The problems we’re immersed in these days are heavy and seemingly immovable. Yet the energy of Gemini is light and playful. So that’s our cue. We’ll cast our spell in a counterintuitive spirit. Let’s be light and have fun with this.
As a magician, I usually say that “wishes” are weak magic, compared to sturdier spells powered by intentions. Focused intentions are weightier; they hold more energy and can travel further in the world. But in the quantum field of consciousness, wishes can indeed be powerful things, if we give them our full attention. Even with a light and playful spirit. To that end, I offer this merry little wishing spell from Dorothy Morrison’s Everyday Moon Magic. I’ve used it for years. It draws on four of Gemini’s powers: mind, language, hands and breath. These become your magical instruments.
Materials: You’ll need one candle (Dorothy recommends using a white one, although my practice is to use whichever color appeals to me at the time… with Gemini, the intellectual vibration of yellow may be optimum). You’ll also need a glass or metal bowl and some coins. First, you’ll use ritual language to charge the bowl so that it becomes a magical space. Next you’ll likewise charge each coin that you toss into it. The coins then become magical objects that you can cleverly plant somewhere later, so that their energies will ripple your wishes out into the world.
The Ritual: Drip a little bit of wax in the center of the bowl and then secure your candle there. Be sure you’re focused and present. Make sure you’re breathing all the way into your belly. Tune into your hands–maybe rub them back and forth. You’re ready when the energy in your hands feels electric and alive. As you light the candle, say:
A wishing bowl, you now become
A magic tool by Moon and Sun
With curving shape, by light of fire
You’ll bring to me what I desire.
I generally like to improvise my words during rituals, so that they come from my heart. But there is value in using a bright musical language like Dorothy’s. Rhyme helps to anchor the spell in your subconscious. I also like to pour a little water into the bowl (of course taking care that it doesn’t drown out the flame!) so that all four elements are included (earth, air, fire and water). But with or without the water, the next step is to toss one coin into the bowl. Say:
By coin of one, this spell’s begun
Toss a second coin into the bowl, saying:
By coin of two, the power brews
Then add a third coin to the bowl, saying:
By coin of three, pay heed to me.
Now, hold your hands over the bowl, framing the candle, and say:
Coins be seeds to feed the power
So wishes sought will bud and flower
By light of fire you now are blessed
And fertilized to manifest
All wishes that come forth from me
As I will, so will it be.
As the candle burns, see the power of your wishing bowl increasing, and when the moment feels right, blow out the flame. You can do this just once. OR you can light the candle every day for seven days. Add coins each time using the appropriate words. Keep visualizing the power of your bowl increasing. I suggest keeping it on your altar until you’ve taken out all the coins and left them in special places.
The coin-planting is the fun part: In the days after you perform the spell, take a “Wishing Walkabout,” carrying the coins with you. Whenever you’re inspired to energize a wish, center yourself. Awaken your breath. Then take a out a coin, hold it in your palm, and say “I wish…(insert your wish)” Next visualize that wish coming true. Feel the joy of this! Then–do whatever your heart moves you to do with the magically energized coin. You can drop it into a wishing well or fountain, bury it in the ground, or leave it somewhere in the city for someone else to find). This release is an important part of all magical spells. It signals that your conscious mind is relinquishing the situation to the Higher Authorities. Recite the following:
To the Earth now you must go
To germinate and sprout and grow
Into that which I require
And manifest what I desire.
It’s also fun to slip your coins into charity jars at retail counters. Remember your wishes don’t have to be just for yourself. You can send good wishes for all beings into the world.
